Situations with sticks : encounters with the nonhuman

This exegesis is an exploration of the following question: how might a work of art help us acknowledge human interconnectedness with the more-than-human world? The paper starts by outlining theories that break down human-centered subjectivity, such as Deleuze and Guattari’s rhizome, object-oriented-ontology, Jane Bennet’s thing-power as well as Buddhist practices. Following this, the project explores how these theories can be realized. The work attempts to jolt the viewer into a fluid space of being – where distinctions between human and nature, self and other, become entangled. It does this through employing 1) out-of-placeness as a tactic to elicit surprise and humour, and 2) embodied phenomenal experiences that create an awareness of our inherent entanglement with the world.
