Object of fashion : on luxury, desire and possessions

This research paper attempts to explore and question desire and obsession for luxury goods, specially branded bags in contemporary material culture. At the same time, it discusses about the changing notion of luxury – from a craft to a commoditized industry – and the relationship between desire and conspicuous consumption that resulted due to the power of marketing and glorification of brand image. Lastly, this paper attempts to examine how these luxury possessions are perceived to be necessary as they serve as the extended self of the consumer, our relationship with what we own, the notions of objects of fashion as well as how these possessions are possibly objects that are representations of meaningless.
