This thesis is a reflection and reportage of the intense traipses of explorations within and out of the studio in my personal attempt to confront and reduce my ethnic identity and assumed social responsibilities. The research bases itself onto the strategies and consequences of particular works by three local Malay artists (Salleh Japar, Rizman Putra and Juliana Yasin) against Mat Sentol, a filmmaker and his idiosyncratic Mat films made from the 1960s till 1970s. These findings are then used to inform my attempt at the production of a series of artworks erased of ethnic derivatives. The intention of this research is not so much in the attainment of absolute conclusions but rather as specimen toward further academic studies and studio based experimentations of artists' engagements with identity and ethnicity in a multi-cultural environment.
