The never ending archive : a visual exploration of memory recollection

The following exegesis dives into my studio practice and research regarding dynamic memory recollection in the three dimensional space of the mind, specifically how it works within the human capabilities of remembering and visualisation. The complex condition of being human provides original experiences. The narratives that shape us are stored as an archive of recorded information that informs our personality and guides us to make choices based on the past which apprises the future. We remember the smell of a memory, we remember our mother’s cooking to comfort us, we listen to music to remember a loved one and so on. The importance of understanding the relationship between rooting emotions to memory is at the core of my practice. So is the comprehension of how personal bias and time affects the recorded image. Being a visual person with a passion for understanding how memory works, it falls upon me to visualise what exists in suspended animation within the mind. What does memory look like? Where does it lie in the complex neural pathways of the mind? How do they exist for different people and what is the ‘recorded image’ if not personal bias affecting archives of information through the passage of time? These are some of the questions my exegesis addresses, but it is important to note that there are no right answers to these questions. The practice is subjective and navigates through practice based research informed by the importance of being an artistic photographer and the understanding of concepts such as colour theory and association. The summation of my research is presented as a video animation superimposed onto a site based installation, which would aim to achieve a dialogue with the audience and try to establish triggers and associations with the artwork.
