The aim of this thesis is to study the theme of morality, drawing out sub-themes, and terminologies that will make their way into my painting practice. Divided into three segments, the central theme of moral ambiguity, the relationship between ‘Vision’ and ‘Darkness’ and the way this contradictory relationship works in painting, will serve as the overall binder of these three papers. Paper One deals with the study of morality, as seen from two differentiating writers, C.S Lewis and Friedrich Nietzsche. This study of varying opinions is brought together, by an analysis of Joseph Conrad’s ‘Heart of Darkness’. From this, a relationship between the themes of moral ambiguity and the act of painting is established. Paper Two expands on the central themes found in Paper One, concentrating on the methodologies used by a selection of artists in relation to those themes, terminologies such as ‘Mental Landscapes’ are derived to bring about a better understanding of the methods I wish to apply in my practice and how it all relates back to my central theme. Finally, the last paper, Paper 3, walks through the documentation of my process, as well as establishing one or two more sub-themes, such as ‘Viral Abstractions’ and terminologies that are explained better when accompanied by my final documentation.
