This research project, titled The Liminal State of Things, seeks to investigate semiotics – focusing on how an artwork’s subject and materials can be utilized as part of symbolisms. This project is loosely inspired by the 17th-century genre of still-life painting and its idea of memento mori. Studio component of this project examines the creation of symbolisms and materiality to produce a catalogue of drawings that can be considered vanitas artworks. Liminality is a key concept in this project and refers directly to the inherent idea behind still-life paintings as well as to the state of contemplation – a state before realization is reached.
